WTCMemorial Twin Pillars of Light 9-11-01

Some things to help each of us to deal with the tragic events of September 11, 2001

My intention: to provide a collection of articles and information, so that each of us is better able to judge for ourselves our future actions, as individuals, as a country, and as humanity.

While I do not always agree with all the words you will read here, I think it is necessary that we are given the opportunity to understand the various--and often disparate--points of view of folks who have given this issue some thought.

Terrorism will end only when we--the powerful and rich countries--sponsor an environment that ends true evil: Hunger, Ignorance, Fear, Poverty, Torture, and Tyranny.

"Please try to keep a sense of balance during this time of trial, the balance between anger and reason. The anger is real and justified but keeping a sense of reason will be the testament to our generation. We must hold on to a belief that good will still prevail. Not a good based on politics or religion, but the good of all humanity. Let those you love know you love them and above all, keep caring about one another."

Mike, Raine, Duncan, Jeremy, and Jamie -- Our Lady of Peace

"What I am advocating is an informed implacability, a shrewd ruthlessness, that will make full use of the new American authority based on American suffering. "

Richard Barron Parker is an American who teaches comparative law at Hiroshima Shudo University. The Japan Times: Oct. 2, 2001

I believe that people have a right to decide their own destinies; people own themselves. I also believe that, in a democracy, government exists because (and only so long as) individual citizens give it a 'temporary license to exist' -- in exchange for a promise that it will behave itself. In a democracy, you own the government -- it doesn't own you.

Along with this comes a responsibility to ensure that individual actions, in the pursuit of a personal destiny, do not threaten the well-being of others while the 'pursuit' is in progress.

-- Frank Zappa, 1989 RIP

We look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms. The first is freedom of speech and expression--everywhere in the world. The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way-- everywhere in the world. The third is freedom from want . . . everywhere in the world. The fourth is freedom from fear . . . anywhere in the world. --President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Message to Congress, January 6, 1941
